XBOX Shooting Itself In The Foot

Ok, so I just joined Reddit. Yeah I know, late to the party as usual. Hell, Liz made it to Reddit before I did, that’s how you know I wasn’t on the ball.

Anyways I was surfing Reddit’s gaming threads and found this story from IGN titled No Used Games on Next Xbox. Now I know there have been all sorts of crazy rumors surrounding the Next Gen consoles, this is really nothing all that new to us die hard gamers. We weep, cheer and wait for when iron clad news is released about our preferred platform. Normally no self respecting gamer gives creedence to rumors and speculation, they wait and see what is real and what is hyperbole.

This however caused an erruption of discontent in my household and a few good points were brought up.

  • 1: This would seriously put a crimp in GameStop’s business, since a lot of gamers use GS’s trade in offers to acquire new games. Whether they are brand new or new to them games.
  • 2: Services like GameFly would officially be rendered obsolete since a game needing an activation code to play would keep you from renting or borrowing games.
  • 3: Games aren’t cheap, at 60 bucks a pop this would help kill the market for game purchasing. I myself have traded in used games to get new ones, if used games are no more then there is no reason to offer a trade in value thus making your games even more worthless after the initial purchasing.

I seriously can’t imagine a game company doing this, but then again I like to think they don’t worship and make live sacrifices to the almighty dollar. Only time will tell and that’s the best we can hope for right now, but I am curious what your thoughts about this are.

Do you think this is ok?

Would something like this keep your from buying the Next Gen console?

Would this be acceptable if it meant a cheaper initial cost?

How much cheaper before this is acceptable?
